The share of electricity used by appliances and electronics in U.S. homes during the past 30 years has nearly doubled, now accounting for one-third of residential energy use. Homes have also increased in size, further increasing the burden on resources. And, despite continuous energy-efficiency improvements, the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts that consumer demand for electricity is projected to increase 31 percent by 2035.
Advancing the nation’s power grid is essential to keeping up with the fast-growing digital age. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was created to bring power plants, transmission lines, substations, transformers and other equipment that deliver electricity to homes and businesses into the 21st century and meet the growing demands of our ever-changing electronic society.
